The Ed Fund welcomes Geral Lowe, our Associate Director of Programs. He’ll be focused on our Oakland School Volunteers program, working with the Oakland Unified School District to identify opportunities for community volunteers to help build positive, equitable outcomes for our public school students.
Geral is an Oakland native and was educated in OUSD schools. After completing his post-secondary education work, he landed home at OUSD in 2010, supporting 21st-Century Learning, and then as a Community Schools Coordinator supporting the classroom chair and helping meet family and community needs. That sparked his passion for education.
Like the Ed Fund, he says he is committed to mitigating equity disparities among students and families of color and enhancing academic achievement.
“It was very evident that the Ed Fund values align with mine, in utilizing education as a passport to experience the world we never thought we could see,” he says.
“I’m excited to learn, grow, and build with the team while creating unique pathways and having meaningful connections with students and families in Oakland,” Geral says.
On the personal side, Geral and his wife have been married for almost four years. They have a 17-month-old daughter, with one more due this November. “We believe a dog will soon join our growing family, too,” he laughs.
When Geral isn’t working, he’s on the golf course playing an early morning or late evening round—usually on the weekend. He says, “It’s a place of peace—even though you’re always chasing the perfect shot. I truly enjoy playing whenever I have the opportunity.”
